On Wh-Exclamatives and Noteworthiness

چکیده
We will aim for two things: (1) extend the empirical focus beyond English whatand howexclamatives, to include exclamatives common in other languages that are based on other wh-words; (2) counter the common assumption that exclamative semantics needs to involve some kind of scalar mechanism. Before we motivate and present our analysis, a word of caution is in order. To simplify matters for this short paper, we will be discussing the semantics of exclamatives like (1) in terms of truth-conditions. Such a move blatantly ignores the fact that an utterance of (1) counts as a speech act that comes with its own intricate and interesting properties, properties which will be quite different from those of an assertion. For the purpose of this short paper, however, we will remain agnostic as to what role the truth-conditions play in the pragmasemantics of exclamatives. (See Rett, 2011; Zanuttini and Portner, 2003, for extensive discussion.)

متن کاملOn the Discourse Effects of wh-Exclamatives
Wh-exclamatives are, arguably, a formally individuated class of clauses that are conventionally associated with a particular use, on a par with declaratives, interrogatives, or imperatives. The characteristics that set them apart formally have been discussed at length by Elliott (1974), Grimshaw (1979), Gutiérrez-Rexach (1996), among many others. In English, the most prominent property of matri...

In German, wh-questions and verb-second wh-exclamatives are string-identical and can only be distinguished by intonation. This study presents data from a production experiment where speakers produced contextualized questions and exclamatives, showing that the two sentence types differ in many acoustic measures throughout the clause. The results also indicate that the realization of both sentenc...

متن کاملThe Force of Negation in Wh Exclamatives and Interrogatives ∗
One could assume that the negative morpheme no in (2) is not semantically negative, but this would be dissatisfying in several respects. First of all, in general we of course would prefer not to postulate an ambiguity, on fear of missing a generalization. Second, the question arises of why it is the negative morpheme which takes on the pleonastic function, if the meaning of this item is not imp...
